Percival Is The Guy -- Does Briah Agree?

Percival and Briah are secondary characters that I grew to love when I read this book. Percival is a bit insecure and Briah is a kick ass girl who leads Percival a merry chase. If you like science fiction/fantasy with a romantic element this is a great book.

EXCERPT:

"It will be dark and it seems the Dolus aren't aware of your presence here, so we should have little to worry about. You don't have to convince me, though. I'd rather get shot by a poisoned arrow than climb for a hundred feet." As soon as the words had left his mouth, Percival knew he had said too much. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and saw the smile growing on her face. He loved the way that smile lit up her face and reached her eyes, but it was as deadly as it was beautiful. The repercussions were almost worth the sight.

"The great Lieutenant Percival Nix scared." She turned around, resting her elbows against the railing and leaning back. "Is it of climbing or heights in general, I wonder?"

"You should be one to talk. My understanding is you're quite scared of heights yourself." He tried to convey the confidence she had but found he was somewhat lacking.

"Terrified," she didn't hesitate. "But I would never let that get in the way of my duty," she said as she absently looked out over the mountains.

Percival bristled. "Who said anything about dereliction of duty?" Percival pointed his finger at her. "You're the one who recommended the elevator."

"Didn't anyone teach you it's rude to point," she said as she pushed his hand away. "I only recommended it after I sensed the quake in your voice."

Percival stood dumbfounded. She had gotten the better of him again, and he had nothing to say in response so he just stood there frustrated.

"Ha," Briah said and tapped her finger on Percival's chest. "Point for me."

"You are frustrating beyond belief."

"Just remember you started it."

"I started it," Percival grabbed her hand gently and pulled her towards himself.

"What do you think you're doing, Lieutenant Nix?"

"Finishing it," he said.

Briah held a hand up and gently pressed her fingers to his lips, holding him at bay. "We have only known each other for a few days, Percival. Don't you think this is a bit quick? We haven't even had a proper date, and I'm still not convinced you would be worth the trouble."

For a second Percival thought he might have moved prematurely, but he could see the smile in her face. "I thought rescuing you in the tunnel counted. I carried you for quite a ways remember, and I'm pretty sure you could have walked. If that's not a signal, I don't know what is."

Briah laughed and the music sent electricity shooting through his body. "Your idea of a date differs greatly from mine."

Trying a different road, Percival said, "We are going into battle tomorrow, and we might not come back you know."
